Are there any restrictions on manure use in organic crop production?

Yes, the restrictions are clarified in section 205.203 of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) Standards Final Rule. Raw manure can be applied to land used for nonhuman crop production. If raw manure is applied to fields with human crop production, it must be incorporated 120 days prior to harvest of a crop that comes in contact with the soil (root crops) or 90 days prior to harvest if the product does not have direct contact with the soil (aboveground leaves or fruits). These restrictions are not applicable if the raw manure is composted in accordance with definition on page 354 of the USDA NOP Standards.

However, if an organic producer certifies with a program above and beyond the USDA program or wishes to sell product internationally, there may be other restrictions on the use of livestock manures. More information can be obtained from a local certifying agency if this is the case.
