Several possible benefits exist in using custom manure applicators. The benefits below do not apply to all situations but can be used as a checklist to determine whether owning equipment or using a custom applicator is preferred.
1) Cost ? Manure application equipment entails a large fixed cost that needs to be spread over as many units as possible. By spreading the investment in equipment over more farms, custom operators can often perform the job at the same or less cost than owning the equipment.
2) Time ? Custom operators frequently can do the job faster than single owner-operators because they have multiple pieces of equipment that can be used simultaneously to finish the job quickly.
3) Expertise ? Manure distribution can be a difficult task given specialized equipment and the regulations associated with it. Custom applicators are usually certified to apply manure according to appropriate regulations, and their employees are trained at handling the specialized equipment.
It is important for the livestock producer to communicate to the custom applicator about the nutrient management plan and any sensitive areas in the field (i.e., tile inlets, setback distances, rock outcroppings).
