Poultry litter consists of poultry manure, a bedding material for insulation and absorption, and other components such as feathers and soil. Wood shavings, sawdust, and soybean, peanut, or rice hulls are all common bedding materials added to the poultry house floor and utilized for raising one to eight flocks on a single placement. If multiple flocks are grown, the houses are usually "caked-out" (removal of the denser or wetter areas) and top-dressed with new bedding between flocks prior to complete cleanout.
