What can be done to make stairs safer for my elderly parent?

Related resource areas: Family Caregiving

There are a number of things you can do to make certain stairs are safe for your parent.

First, ensure that all stairs are in good condition and are free of clutter and other objects. Also, make sure that stairways have sturdy handrails on both sides and that the handrails extend beyond the end of the stairs.

In addition, see to it that stairways are adequately lighted with light switches at the top and bottom. Put nonskid strips on each step, and, if carpeting is present, make sure it is securely fastened and free of fraying or holes.
