You may be able to show more love and patience toward family members and the person receiving care when you take good care of yourself. Try these four steps:

- Recognize the warning signs of stress EARLY. Examples include: eating more, forgetfulness, nothing bringing pleasure, having no energy, headaches, upset stomach, and blood pressure rising.

- Identify sources of stress. Examples include: too much to do, lack of sleep, repeated questions from the person you are caring for, no time for yourself, or interruptions.

- Identify what YOU can and cannot change.

- Take action. Taking some action reduces stress and you gives a sense of control.
