The water dissolves minerals in the ground or from rocks in the streams, rivers, and lakes. The rocks must be soluble to increase water hardness. Limestone, calcite and other soluble minerals will add to water hardness. Crystalline rocks, such as quartz and granite, do not readily add to water hardness.
