The term "Impaired Waters" refers to waters that do not meet standards for their designated use (fishing, swimming, etc.). Drinking water must be in better condition (cleaner) than water used for swimming and fishing. However, water used for swimming and fishing must be clean enough to protect the health of people and fish. The Federal Government has set water quality standards for the different types of water use. These standards identify pollution, dissolved oxygen, pH and other water quality measures for each use. Nearly 40% of our waters nationwide do not meet designated standards.
