How is the amount of suspended sediment measured?

A measured amount of water is filtered. The material trapped in the filter is dried and weighed in milligrams. This gives the amount of suspended sediment (solids) in milligrams per liter of water. High levels of suspended sediments affect water temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, plant growth and other factors.
