Sand, silt and clay can all make water murky. However, clay particles are so small that it would take more than 1000 of them to equal the size of a small grain of sand. Since they are so small, they can stay suspended in water for a long time. In fact, the movement of the water molecules in non-flowing water can keep clay particles from settling out.
