What is an aquifer?

An aquifer is a layer of water-holding sediment or rock. Aquifers close to the land surface, usually less than 100 feet, are called shallow aquifers. Deeper aquifers can be under pressure and are called artesian aquifers. The pressure actually forces the water out of the ground.
