The best combination of Charolais and Brangus to produce weaning weight is to mate Charolais bulls to Brangus cows. Breeding average cattle of each breed would generate very acceptable growth performance; however, the potential for heterosis in the Brangus cow would be a decided advantage as opposed to the straight-bred Charolais cow. Also, the selection of Charolais bulls would generally be more extensive, as opposed to Brangus bulls. Location could be important to your question. For example, Brangus cows would have a greater adaptability advantage in the southern United States but could be at a disadvantage in the northern Great Plains.
