Why should I get my cows checked for pregnancy, and when is the best time to determine if they are pregnant?
Pregnancy diagnosis is a highly useful tool to help producers reduce winter feeding costs and to determine how to market non-pregnant females. Determining pregnancy status and marketing non-pregnant cows reduce costs of production by removing non-productive cows from the herd. Feeding these cows throughout the fall and winter typically costs producers $150 to $250 per cow.
Work with your local veterinarian to determine the optimum time to diagnose pregnancy. Pregnancy diagnosis is a skill, and each technician will have a time frame during gestation when he or she feels more comfortable making a diagnosis. The most convenient time for a producer is at or near weaning time.
