What are some tips for getting a job and "putting your best foot forward" to potential employers?

Related resource areas: Personal Finance

To get a job these days, you must convince employers that you have the necessary skills and experience. This is generally done in writing and/or in person. Below are some tips:

Resumes
* Keep it short (two pages maximum; one page is better). Most employers spend only 15 to 30 seconds reading a resume.
* Use an outline format with short phrases.
* Neatness counts! A resume should be typed and printed on white or cream bond paper. Never send a bad photocopy.
* Proofread carefully for typos and spelling and grammatical errors.
* List your present job first and work backward. Stress accomplishments and skills rather than dates of jobs.
* Include your home address, e-mail address, and phone number. Do not include personal data such as marital status.
* Include key words from a job announcement. Many employers scan resumes with computers to screen qualified candidates.
* Send a cover letter with a resume. Describe your qualifications and interest in a particular employer. Close with a request for an interview.
* Avoid overusing the word “I” in a cover letter. It gives the impression that you are concerned only about yourself.

Interviews
* Do your homework. Research potential employers, and learn about their products or services.
* Use the interviewer’s last name (e.g., “Mr. Jones”) from time to time.
* Be positive. When asked about previous employers, say something nice.
* Send a thank-you note a day or two later. It’s a way to “sell” yourself and include information not covered in the interview.
