What is the federal estate tax exemption and federal estate tax rate in upcoming years?

Related resource areas: Personal Finance

The following federal estate tax exemption amounts and maximum estate tax rates are scheduled through 2011, according to current estate tax legislation, which, of course, is subject to change:

2007
$2,000,000 exemption
45% tax rate

2008
$2,000,000 exemption
45% tax rate

2009
$3,500,000 exemption
45% tax rate

2010
Estate Tax Repealed
0% tax rate

2011
$1,000,000 exemption
55% tax rate

It is anticipated that the amounts in 2011 may change, but it will take passage of an amended law in Congress to do so.
