The best method to treat ticks will vary among attending veterinarians. Product selection must be based on product label use, and recommendations based on effectiveness against specific tick species and conditions in your area. Generally, several products are labeled for treatment of ear ticks in horses. A 3% foam product containing Coumaphos is one product suggested for tick control on horses. Various sprays containing this chemical or permethrin are also recommended for tick control as whole body sprays. Consulation with local Cooperative Extension personnel may help you to address tick management control by removing tick breeding areas in the place the horse is housed, i.e., brush control, etc., if applicable to your situation.
