Cotton quality is highest when the bolls first open and can only be preserved by quick harvesting to avoid bad weather, etc. The objective of a good harvest aid program is to prepare the mature crop for harvesting as rapidly as possible. Strategies for harvest aid chemical application depend upon the harvesting method used (spindle picking versus brush-roll stripping), and location in the Cotton Belt. Seasonal effects are also important, and the best products and rates to use can vary from year to year, even at the same location. Visit with local Extension personnel to determine what's working in your area.
