In a two-horse trailer hauling only one horse, the horse is usually loaded on the driver's side of the trailer, or the left side. Since the natural road contour slopes to the right, the horse will generally be more comfortable with greater leg space to his right. More important, by loading the horse on the driver's side, the load will generally be distributed to more easily maintain control of the towing vehicle and trailer. If the driver has to swerve, for example, and the horse is loaded on the passenger side rather than on the driver's side, the weight of the horse can cause the trailer to "pull" toward the shoulder of the road, often off the road. This situation can be hazardous and can increase the likelihood of accidents due to losing control of the trailer and towing vehicle.
