Prophylactic treatment with penicillin along with vaccinations of the disease at a two-week interval is a recommendation in outbreaks to kill the bacteria that are possibly active in the muscles and potentially killing more calves. However, the stress of exertion from working the calves may trigger recrudescence of blackleg latent, non-active infections and cause deaths from new active bacteria. Consult your private veterinarian on the appropriate route for your particular situation.
Unlike most other resources on the web, we have experts from Universities around the country ready to answer your questions.
