Determining the most common urban insect pest found in Colorado depends on the category of pest--take your pick. The nuisance invaders--those that temporarily use homes--are most common. These include conifer seed bugs, boxelder bugs, elm leaf beetles and cluster flies whose local abundance is affected by landscaping. In June, the most common household insect pest can be miller moths such as adult army cutworms migrating to the mountains. The most common nuisance ants are either field ants, pavement ants or Pharoah ants. Cockroaches can occur in urban areas, but are less common in Colorado than elsewhere. The German cockroach is most common in this area. All of these are in the running for Colorado's most common urban insect pest. More information on all of these pests can be found in Cooperative Extension fact sheets at: Insect Fact Sheets. ***
