What can I do about rabbits that are eating my shrubs and stripping away the bark? High snow levels are contributing to this problem.

Trees and shrubs with the bark stripped bare on all sides of the trunk or stem have a hard time surviving. If the damage is only on one side, chances are good that the tree or shrub will survive. To prevent further injury, use 1-inch mesh hardware cloth, wrapping the wire around the trunk up 20 inches higher than the expected snow level and preferably burying a couple inches in the soil beneath the plant. Some repellents may be temporarily effective but need to be renewed when washed off by snow or rain.
