Many broadleaf weeds can be eliminated by hand pulling or digging. They will come out easily following a rain or shortly after watering. Perennial weeds will require digging. If bare spots result, it would be a good idea to “patch” them with pieces of compatible sod. Sod patches will require daily water until established.
Several different weeds loosely fit the description you provided. See Fact Sheet #3.100 – "Broadleaf Weed Control in Lawns." You may be able to identify the weed(s) from the descriptions and illustrations. Controls are listed. Positive identification of the weed(s) is necessary for adequate control. If you are unable to identify the weed(s), you may take a sample of it to the Colorado State University Extension office nearest you. A fresh, entire plant is needed for positive identification. For more information, see http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/pubgard.html#yard for Fact Sheet #7.202 – "Lawn Care."
To achieve a healthy lawn, follow the recommendations contained in the fact sheet. Check to make sure sprinkler coverage is adequate. Areas not receiving water will become sparse, creating an ideal place for weeds to sprout
