I am a long distance caregiver and visit my relative on most holidays. Are there things I should check on when I visit?
During the holiday season, many people will visit with an aging relative whom they haven’t seen for several months and begin to notice signs that their relative may need support. When visiting aging relatives, take time to evaluate and observe how they are doing. Talk about their health and their wishes for when they need assistance or can’t care for themselves. Don’t wait for a crisis, such as a stroke or a fall, to begin these conversations or to begin providing assistance. There are warning signs that an aging relative may need some assistance.
