In compost dairy barns, what percentage of manure accumulates in the composting bedded pack area versus the concrete feed alley that is scraped clean twice a day?

Producers estimate that between 25 to 35 percent of the manure voided by the cows ends up in the concrete feed alley that is scraped at least twice a day during milking. Some manure is voided in the milking center and holding area. Operations that graze the milking herd have less manure in the pack area too. The manure in the feed alley will contain some bedding that is dragged down onto the alley by cows and by the equipment used to stir and aerate the pack. No research studies have reported measured amounts of manure voided in the feed alley.
