I have boxelder trees that have some dead branches with loose bark. It looks as if the tree bark is growing over the base of the dead branches. What is happening? Is this a natural thing for the tree to do?

Trees respond to injury by compartmentalizing damaged or dying tissue. Depending upon the nature and location of the injury, protective callus growth may eventually cover the affected area. Proper pruning can facilitate the process. Dead branches should be removed.
