Your gelding may be having a reaction to the silicone coating on the needle. Although not common, some horses seem to react to the silicone that is placed on the needle to make it slide through the skin more easily. Your veterinarian can purchase needles that are non-coated steel needles and use those for your horse's injections. If using these needles do not result in a reaction, your horse is one of the few that reacts to the silicone coating on the needle.

I have a 10 year old Dutch Warmblood, imported from Holland just over two years ago. Each time he has an injection (either IV or IM) he is having skin reactions such as heat and swelling and they are getting progressively worse. He still has a knot over his jugular from a banamine injection from Oct. Who can I contact for more information on how to prevent/ treat this before he gets seriously worse? My veterinarian has already tried many of the normal treatments/ preventions.
