A home study or family assessment is the process by which a licensing agency or state agency gathers information and evaluates a family’s ability to provide care for children who may be placed in the home through foster care. This assessment includes evaluating the physical environment of the home for safety and determining if there is adequate space. The family’s capacity for parenting will also be assessed, as well as the family’s motivation and commitment to providing a safe, caring environment for children. In most cases, the family completes forms and checklists followed by a home visit from a licensed social worker.
