Any pesticide product approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and applied according to the directions on the label should be safe for people, pets, and the environment. Ferti-lome's Come & Get It fire ant killer contains spinosad as the active ingredient. This product is certified as organic by the Organic Materials Research Institute. Formulated and applied as a bait, this product can be scattered around mounds or applied as a broadcast application. As with other baits, animals attracted to the corn grit plus soybean oil bait particles would have difficulty finding enough to consume to experience toxic effects. Fire ant workers quickly pick up the bait, moving the active ingredient into the fire ant colony and away from other organisms. Fire ant baits are considered to be very safe for the environment because they contain such a small amount of active ingredient. Baits contain a very low percentage of active ingredients, usually less than 1 percent. The main threat to pets from bait-formulated products is the pet’s eating massive quantities of it. Proper storage should help avoid such an incident. For more information: http://fireant.tamu.edu/materials/factsheets_pubs/pdf/fireantcontrolaroundpets.pdf
