Sugar can increase biological activity in the soil. This is good in that microbial action in the soil will liberate more nutrients, but there is not credible scientific evidence backing the idea that sugar in the planting hole makes tomato fruit sweeter. If you are looking for sweeter tomatoes, select varieties to plant that are touted by seed catalogs as sweeter or having that “old-fashioned” flavor.
