Is it true I can use an application of salt to control weeds in my asparagus bed?

Salt has been used in the past to control weeds in asparagus beds; however, this is no longer considered a good gardening practice. Asparagus is more tolerant of salt than many weeds but salt applied to the asparagus patch can be damaging to the soil and other nearby vegetables.
