The harmfulness of a pesticide frequently depends on the use and the user. Even pesticides that are considered relatively safe can become dangerous if misused. However, pesticides can also be very beneficial when used in a responsible manner.

In general, it's best to use least hazardous materials, when possible. Many low hazard pesticides are available, and more are being developed each year from both naturally occurring and synthetic materials. Since 2003, many new pesticide registrations have met criteria set by EPA for "reduced risk", including lower hazards to human health and non-target organisms, and reduced potential for contamination of groundwater, surface water, and other environmental resources. Be sure if you use a pesticide that you choose a legal and effective product and that you follow the label.
