Why are schools and hospitals implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

Last Updated: March 11, 2009

Schools and hospitals are ares that need to pay careful attention to pest management because of the sensitivity of their occupants. Children hospital patients may be more sensitive to allergens produced by pests and the pesticides used to manage those pests. The pest tolerance level in these places is extremely low.
Traditionally schools and hospitals have been treated on a regular basis. In recent years, some allergy problems and illness have been linked to the pesticides themselves. IPM is a better choice and includes multiple compatible tactics such as, monitoring, pest exclusion, sanitary practices and pesticide treatments (if necessary). IPM has been shown to provide better, safer, pest management. When pesticides are used, they are used in a more practical and site-specific way.
