FAQ #3859

What are the characteristics of a good cowherd supplementation program?

Related resource areas: Beef Cattle

Characteristics of the proper supplement are to:

1) Correct nutritional deficiencies in the diet
2) Correct nutritional imbalances in the diet
3) Be economical in providing nutritional needs, handling, and storage
4) Be readily available throughout the feeding period
5) Be carriers for desired feed additives at the proper inclusion rate

A supplement should be selected based on the nutritional needs of the cow herd. Cattle in different stages of production have different nutrional needs. Forages should be tested for protein and energy levels to determine the level of supplementation needed. Contact your extension educator for more specific information.
