NAIS is a state-federal-industry partnership that aims to expand animal identification throughout the country in order to find and track animals or farms that have come into direct contact with a livestock disease. The program works by identifying premises with livestock, identifying individual animals, and tracking these animals from location to location. The program was originally voluntary, but as of 2009, USDA is moving to make participation mandatory.
