Exterior sprinklers can help sometimes, but they should be on a stand-alone water supply (that is, not one that the fire department is relying on to fight the fire), and they shouldn't rely on power from the utility company. They should be powered by a generator or be a pressurized system. An exterior sprinkler system, however, may not prevent embers from entering your home through vents or igniting patio furniture and decks. An effective vegetation management plan and use of ignition-resistant building material practices are effective in protecting homes from wildfires.
