The width of the roof overhang is one of a number of conflicting house design issues. From the perspective of a wildfire threat, a narrow overhang is arguably better. However, your home will experience other exposures during its life, which you should also consider. A wide overhang is a much better option for protecting your exterior walls from rain — the wider, the better. If your roof has a wide overhang, make sure it is protected from embers and flame by using appropriate materials and design. For more information, see FAQ 39238.
