Metal flashing at the base of the wall can provide extra protection to combustible siding, particularly when the siding is adjacent to a deck, or other horizontal surface. The flashing will provide protection if debris that has accumulated against the siding (flashing) is ignited by embers. If you decide to install metal flashing, extend it up the siding about 18 inches, and make sure to integrate it into the siding so water can't get behind it (this procedure is sometimes called "letting in"). If built to code, there will be clearance between the ground and siding, and in this case, flashing won't be as helpful.
