Planting trees and shrubs, as well as grasses and other plants, can be the fastest and surest way to revegetate a burned forest area. Natural revegetation will add to this effort, but is usually not as fast and is less certain. Whether planting or relying on natural revegetation, invasive weed species may become a problem. Because many weeds do not compete well with other plants, rapid replacement of desired vegetation is one way to combat invasives. However, some invasive species are adapted to out-compete and replace native vegetation; in this case, selective herbicides may be the best remedy to control unwanted plant species.
