On properties where the water table rises after a fire, the soils are poorly drained. It usually takes a long time for forests to develop on these lands, but once they do, the trees use enormous quantities of water causing a drop in the water table. When removed by fire or other factors, the trees no longer pump water from the land into the atmosphere or use water for growth. The water table rises, and it may take much longer than better drained land for the forest to regrow.
