A pheromone is a chemical substance secreted by an animal into its environment that evokes a response in another individual of the same species. There are different types of pheromones. These include sex, food attractant/trail, alarm, queen mandibular, and territorial pheromones. These have been investigated in insects and mammals. Some orchid plants emit a chemical that mimics sex pheromone of insect pollinators to attract them.
