Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats. It is among a number of diseases classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). The sheep industry is unique at the moment in the fact that there is a genetic test for susceptibility to Scrapie. Producers using the record keeping components of either of the voluntary or mandatory programs, and selection within breeding stock can help eradicate this disease from the industry.
