The best thing you can do in this situation is to spend an hour or two with an attorney who is well versed in employment-related law. The expense will be well worth it. To save money on legal fees, go fully prepared with all documentation related to your situation including correspondence about the leave from work, any police reports and insurance claims related to the auto accident, and medical reports about your wife's health status. An attorney can then advise you on your rights and applicable state laws. For example, some states have laws that further extend family and medical leave benefits available under federal law.
