A soil test, the best available guide to the application of fertilizers and other nutrient sources, also is an excellent diagnostic tool for problem soils. Soil analysis for fertilizer recommendation usually includes soil pH, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium. The test may also provide information on electrical conductivity (salinity), nitrate nitrogen, and other analyses. Once laboratory analyses are acquired, the report is interpreted by Extension staff in context of desired plant growth and performance.
