In some areas, residents may receive recorded calls and/or text messages on their cell phones through an automated telephone notification system. If authorities have enough time and personnel, fire services, law enforcement, or emergency responders generally attempt to personally alert residents during the evacuation. Media outlets may announce an evacuation utilizing the Emergency Broadcast System, and it may be placed on local government Web sites.

Although authorities will do their best to provide timely notification of the need to evacuate, fire can travel very quickly and conditions can change rapidly, so it is important to remain aware of changing conditions and not depend on a notification to decide to evacuate.
