My wife has pre-tax health coverage at work. We can no longer afford to pay for it, but they say we cannot cancel until open enrollment. If she quits her job, how long will she have to be unemployed before she can get re-hired and have no insurance taken out?

This is a question that is specific to your employment situation, and you will need to get an answer from your employer. However, we would not recommend quitting a job, especially during a major recession, in order to avoid insurance premium deductions. Nor would we recommend going without health insurance. Talk with your employer and explain your difficulty in making premium payments. Perhaps there are other ways to find financial relief such as having less income tax withheld from your paycheck if you have been receiving a large tax refund.
