Why can't employees change health insurance coverage from family to single status until the open enrollment period? I got a new job with free coverage for me and my husband will be spending an additional $3,300 because he is unable to change. What can be done about this?

Health insurance rules are generally set by employers and employees must follow them. Typically, with employer health insurance plans, the only time that you can change coverage outside of the designated open enrollment period is for specific life events such as a marriage, birth, death, or qualified adoption. Sometimes companies consider other events, such as a change in a spouse's employment, as a qualifying event. Check with the human resources department at your husband's company to see if change of employment of a spouse is considered a qualifying event. Generally, notification of a qualifying event must happen within a certain time frame.
