The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that because the number of laboratory confirmed cases and worldwide distribution of the virus was so great as of July 16, 2009, countries with wide-spread transmission of pandemic 2009 (novel H1N1) infection are no longer required to submit regular reports of individual laboratory-confirmed cases to WHO. Countries newly affected by the virus are urged to report both first confirmed cases and weekly aggregated case numbers.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates more than five million people in the US have had or have novel H1N1. Since late August 2009 CDC began reporting cases of seasonal and H1N1 influenza as one. Thousands have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died in the United States from H1N1.
