Bankruptcy applicants must complete a two-hour credit counseling session with an approved credit counseling agency within six months before filing. Credit counseling became a requirement for bankruptcy in 2005 and was widely viewed as a way for debtors to explore all their debt repayment options before filing. Bankruptcy credit counseling sessions may be conducted in person, online, or by telephone.
