Farms and other bird facilities are encouraged to enforce strict biosecurity measures including isolation, traffic control (i.e., controlling movement of personnel, vehicles, equipment and birds) and strict hygiene and sanitation. Most commercial poultry operations routinely monitor their flocks for avian influenza (AI) prior to processing for human consumption.
Additional biosecurity measures on state, federal, and industry levels include enforcing strict bird quarantine and testing regulations targeting poultry, pet and imported birds, and birds for exhibit at zoos, especially those entering the United States.
Trade restrictions are in place for those countries with active outbreaks of highly pathogenic AI. Customs and Border Protection agents maintain vigilance for birds or poultry products smuggled into the country. Migratory birds on major flyways are also being monitored for AI.
