FAQ #471

Should I feed beet pulp if my horse is losing weight?

Related resource areas: Horses

There are a number of reasons that could cause a horse to lose weight. A few of those reasons could be internal parasite problems, age of the horse, dental care, change in work load, and a change in diet, all of which could contribute to weight loss. You should ascertain the reason for the weight loss first before assuming feeding a feedstuff will stop weight loss. Beet pulp can be used in feeds to increase body weight or to decrease weight loss. While beet pulp can be effective, there may be other feeds that could be used. Added dietary fat in the form of an oil to the horse's diet can also increase body weight by adding calories. Using good quality hay also helps the horse maintain its weight.
