You can prevent this event from happening again by leashing the dog and/or preventing rabbits from entering your property by installing an 18-inch tall fence around the perimeter. Chicken wire will work, but it will only last a few years. Be sure the fence is securely fastened to the ground to prevent rabbits from squeezing underneath it.
